Building Science 1

Project 1 :
Human Perception of Comfort Level

For this project, the main aim of it was to acquire the basic and fundamental understanding of Thermal Comfort within a Building with Analysing a space within a Residential Structure.

By studying the internal thermal performance of the Infrastructure, various factors and regulations were to be taken into consideration during this analysis session. Factors such as the Sunpath, the wind direction, internal temperature vs outside temperature, performing appliances within the area were to be taken into consideration.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Identify environmental conditions related to site conditions, climate, etc.

2. Explain the effects of the sun on the thermal performance of buildings

3. Explain the effect of insulation, thermal mass and air movement on thermal performance of buildings.

4. Infer how different building material (K-value, u-value, r-value) has different effect on heat gain or thermal environment in a given space

Project 2 :
Integration with Architectural Design Studio 3

This project is basically an application of what knowledge has been acquired from project one. At the only exception that the OTTV and RTTV calculation part has been included in this project as the objective of this project was to evaluate our own design and check whether it was within the requirements according to ASHRAE MS1525.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Ability to understand sun path and exposed facade in order to orientate the design in such a way to maximize natural lighting during day time.

2. Learning of how to orientate the building in order to maximize natural ventilation through cross ventilation and stack ventilation.

3. Ability to understand calculations for OTTV and RTTV.

4. Understanding of zoning in terms of natural ventilation and mechanical ventilation.

5. An indepth understanding of Basic Building Design and Passive Cooling design.
