Building Construction 2

Project 1 :
Understanding Forces in
Skeletal Structures

For this project, the task assigned was to design and build efficiently a tower made only of popsicle sticks without the usage of any glue. Design limitations such as not to exceed the amount of hundred sticks was applied to the context and also the requirement of reaching at least thirty centimeters in height or highly. The intention of this project was to acquire an understanding in terms of efficient skeletal designs and a better understanding of live load and dead load and also acting forces.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. A better understanding of the term EFFICIENCY

2. A better understanding of forces mechanism.

3. The understanding of Live Load and Dead Load.

4. Ability to design with minimum amount of materials.

5. Learning how to exploit the full potential of any materials to its breaking limit.

6. Learning of how to evaluate a good and efficient structure.

Project 2 :
Understanding Forces in Solid Structure & Surface Structure

The aim of this project is still about the same matter as the first project but this time it is about understanding forces within either solid construction or surface construction. Our group chosed to explore surface construction rather than solid construction and we chosed New Milan Trade Fair by Studio Fuksas. The part we tackled was the canopy of the architecture.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Identifications of basic structural systems in construction
2. Compare solid and surface construction systems.
3. Differentiate solid and surface construction systems in terms of loads and forces acting on structural elements.
4. Recognize and apply the implications of construction system in design.
5. Analyse the issues of strength, stiffness and stability of structures including modes of structural systems, forces, stress and strain and laws of static.
